He refers to Woodcock as Tommy in his fabulous book, Agua Caliente Story. Using Bobby is an oversight, or he may have had "Bobby" going through his mind as that was Phar Lap's stable name. dp robertsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12307128599943887153noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-934167006275624061.post-32501178154662616662010-02-16T22:33:43.740-08:002010-02-16T22:33:43.740-08:00Thrusday August 5 1971, Agua Caliente burns to the...Thrusday August 5 1971, Agua Caliente burns to the ground! I would think that the 1923 match race between the American classic winner Zev and the English Derby winner Papyrus would be the first race of such, or at least the first race of such magnitude. My question is this: Would you consider Phar Lap's arrival for the race here the first instance of a horse shipping from abroad for a race? Aussie Harry Telford was the horse's trainer and part owner and didn't want the horse to come, but the American owner David Davis brought him over with Tommy Woodcock, who may have been his groom.sid fernandohttp://www.sidfernando.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-934167006275624061.post-709972263695614502009-12-09T21:32:25.518-08:002009-12-09T21:32:25.518-08:00Great post, I didn't know a lot of the history...Great post, I didn't know a lot of the history to this race before.
Phar Lap has always been one of my favorite horses of all time, love the write-up on him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-934167006275624061.post-61337987244985160512009-12-09T12:23:17.501-08:002009-12-09T12:23:17.501-08:00The original Coffroth purse might not sound like m...The original Coffroth purse might not sound like much, but it's the equivalent of something like $275,000 by today's dollar. The Real Tijuanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01343224926056385215noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-934167006275624061.post-22371097960984123662009-12-09T09:09:58.160-08:002009-12-09T09:09:58.160-08:00Thank you for this piece of history, enjoyed it th...Thank you for this piece of history, enjoyed it thoroughly!Sharla Sanders, Founder, The Second Racehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08666339622660709498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-934167006275624061.post-43779687287803993062009-12-09T08:04:37.194-08:002009-12-09T08:04:37.194-08:00Mary and David,

The winner of the Dixie Handicap and Latonia Cup, Mike Hall was a quite useful staying handicapper and ran Preakness winner Display to a nose in the Hawthorne Gold Cup.

But I enjoyed the story and was thrilled to see the historic photos included with this piece.

Would love to see and read more.

All the best,
Frank Mitchellfrank mitchellhttp://fmitchell07.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
