Don't miss an opportunity to meet internationally acclaimed jockey Garrett Gomez and award-winning biographer Rudy Alvarado TODAY at Del Mar, where they will be signing copies of The Garrett Gomez Story: A Jockey's Jouirney Through Addiction & Salvation.

The remarkable book chronicles Gomez' journey through the depths of alcoholism and drug addiction to his amazing recovery.

"I didn't want a book about my history as a jockey," said Gomez. "I wanted a book that was going to inspire and touch people." That is precisely what Gomez and Alvarado were able to accomplish in this fascinating and moving story.

It is well worth the read, and for those lucky enough to be at today's book signing the icing on the cake will be the moment when they look  into the eyes of the man who lived through hell and emerged with the strength and determination to have a positive impact on the lives of us all.

The book signing takes place in the Plaza de Mexico at Del Mar Racetrack from noon to 1:30 p.m. today. All proceeds will benefit Winners Foundation.

Well Monied preps for Spinster

Garrett Gomez works Well Monied at Santa Anita, 9/29/11

Well Monied is on her way to Kentucky for the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Keeneland. She prepped for the Spinster with a six-furlong work over Santa Anita's main track on Thursday morning, Sept. 29, with jockey Garrett Gomez up.

The 5-year-old Maria's Mon mare, trained by Howard Zucker for C.T. Grether, Inc., returned from a four-month rest to finish 7th in the Grade 2 Palomar Handicap at a mile and one-sixteenth on the turf at Del Mar on Sept. 5 - a race in which she was closing strongly in the stretch.

The Spinster, at a mile and one-eighth on the Polytrack, is one of North America's most important weight-for-age races held exclusively for fillies and mares. It is also a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race for the Lady's Classic division.

Good luck to Well Monied and her California connections!

Internallyflawless Scores a Mild Upset in Del Mar Oaks

Internallyflawless and jockey Garrett Gomez held off 30-1 longshot Nan to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 1-1/8 miles on the turf.

Internallyflawless, a daughter of Giant's Causeway, is trained by Bob Baffert for owner/breeder Charles Fipke. In her previous start she was 4th in a troubled trip in the San Clemente Handicap on Aug. 1.

The heavy favorite, Well Monied, whose chances were compromised by a slow pace and wide trip, finished third.

Colonel John Back in Action at Del Mar

I caught some video of Colonel John as he galloped by me twice on Thursday morning. Colonel John returned to the races in impressive fashion last Friday after a 7-month break, winning the Wickerr Handicap by two lengths for trainer Eoin Harty and jockey Garrett Gomez. The 2008 Santa Anita Derby and Travers Stakes winner looks to be back in fine form!

Rich History and Current Interest Surround Sunday's Las Cienegas Handicap

The Avila Adobe in downtown Los Angeles, once part of Las Cienegas Rancho.

The 35th running of the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Handicap at Santa Anita on Sunday is noteworthy in more than one way.

The race will provide a final chance for jockey Garrett Gomez, who returns from Keeneland to ride Tuscan Evening, to match a Santa Anita record for most stakes wins in a single season. The record of 19 stakes wins is shared by Laffit Pincay Jr. (1982-83) and Corey Nakatani (1996-97). It will also mark Gomez's final appearance at the current Santa Anita meet, which ends on April 19.

On another note, trainer Barry Abrams will be seeking a second consecutive win in the Las Cienegas with Bel Air Sizzle, having won the 2008 running with Lightmyfirebaby.

The name of the race, like so many of Santa Anita's historical stakes races, evokes an earlier time rich in the tradition of the early California ranchos. It is named for Rancho La Cienega O' Paso de la Tijera, or simply Las Cienegas Rancho, an early land grant in southwestern Los Angeles county. The lengthy name was originally given to a series of adjoining adobe structures near the pueblo of Los Angeles, one of which is thought to be the oldest surviving building in the city. Another, known as the Avila Adobe, on Olvera Street in the downtown area, was built in 1818 and retains the honor of the oldest residence in Los Angeles.

The original land grant, approximately 4,500 acres, was made in 1843 to Vicente Sanchez by Manuel Micheltorena, the Mexican Governor of Alta California. "La Cienega" is derived from the Spanish word cienaga, which means swamp or marshland and refers to the marshes in the area between Baldwin Hills and Beverly Hills. "Paso de la Tijera," or "Pass of the Scissors," was used by the early Spanish to describe the pass into Los Angeles through the nearby hills, which resembled an open pair of scissors.

Here's the field for Sunday's Las Cienegas:

Today's San Rafael Stakes Will Touch Off Derby Fever

Preps for this year's Triple Crown races get under way on the West Coast today with the Grade 3 San Rafael Stakes, which has produced six Santa Anita Derby winners in its 28-year history. As with several of Santa Anita's premier stakes races, the San Rafael is named for an early California rancho. The cities of Burbank, Glendale and Montrose now occupy the site of San Rafael Rancho, one of the earliest Spanish land grants, about 1785.

Garrett Gomez has the mount for trainer Bobby Frankel on Brother Keith, who is making his stakes debut.

The likely favorite will be Square Eddie, impressive winner of the Grade 1 Breeders Futurity at Keeneland and runner-up to Midshipman in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Another to watch is The Pamplemousse, the roan son of Kafwain, who won at 1-1/16 miles Dec. 14 at Hollywood Park.

Best of luck and safe trip to all... and let's get this party started!

Garrett Gomez and So. California Jockeys Donate $16,500 to Winners Foundation

Edited Santa Anita press release.
Jockey Garrett Gomez and a group of Southern California based riders contributed $16,500 to the Winners Foundation today in a winners' circle ceremony following the sixth race at Santa Anita Park. The Winners Foundation helps individuals and families in the racing industry with alcohol and substance abuse problems.

"Without the Winners Foundation, I wouldn't be riding today," said Gomez, who led all North American jockeys in purse money won for a third consecutive year in 2008. "I owe a deep debt of gratitude to Bob Fletcher and everyone involved with the Winners Foundation. They have provided me strength and have helped me maintain my focus during my period of recovery. My family and I could never thank them enough, and I'm honored to be able to give back to the Winners Foundation in this way.

"They help people throughout racing, on the backside, frontside, everywhere. I can't think of a more deserving organization, and I know I speak for hundreds of other people. They do great work, and I wish them all the best in the New Year," he added.

The check was presented on behalf of the jockeys by Darrell Haire, Western Regional Jockey Guild Manager and Winners Foundation board member. Accepting the check on behalf of Winners Foundation were executive director Bob Fletcher, board president Gino Roncelli, and directors Mary Forney and George Haines. Haines is also general manager of Santa Anita.
