Zap! of the Week: Zenyatta Remains Perfect

Zap of the Week

Larry Zap brings you a fans' eye view of the great race mare Zenyatta winning the 2009 Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at beautiful Del Mar Racetrack, her closest decision yet, by a nose over Anabaa's Creation and Lethal Heat. It was Zenyatta's second consecutive Clement L. Hirsch win and brought her record to 12 for 12.

This video really gives you a feel for the excitement of the crowd and the enormous popularity of the great Zenyatta. Enjoy!

I wonder if they will ever grow a pair and face some real competition. She barely beat an allowance horse. He said "The greatest thoroughbred maybe of all time" in the video. You have to be kidding me!!!

I agree that Zenyatta needs to prove herself against better horses. Her winning speeds too pale against those of Rachel Alexandra. I think Zenyatta merits being given some real competition so we can see how good she is - let her face the colts and RA.

PS the bit about "the greatest thoroughbred of all times" is an absurd and utterly preposterous insult to the true greats: Secretariat and Ruffian, and a long series of other superb horses (Citation etc). Come on Larry Zap, have you lost your mind...??????!!!???

Ouch, you three. A 12 for 12 record is no small feat. Zenyatta may not be the best of the best but she's no slouch either. I agree that I'd like to see her run against Rachel Alexandra. I don't believe she would win that race, but, every race is a gamble. You all know that. Every horse has it's off day. We might all be surprised. And then again, maybe not.

Zenyatta never has had an off day...her dirt race at Oaklawn proved she is a dirt horse...i can only imagine what she would do on that sweeping turn at Belmont Park...doubting how great or not so great Zenyatta is makes Anonymous sound like a fool...there has never (i repeat never) been a horse who gets grabbed out of contention early and no matter what the fractions are still makes up the ground...many of you who insist yesterday's horses are always better need to open your eyes...Zenyatta is physically one of the most impressive individuals of either sex in the history of thoroughbred racing...she is amazing and is the best horse to race in the states since Sunday Silence.

Thank you, Larry! Great video as always.

It ain't Zenyatta's fault that the pacesetters slowed down to a crawl. She still closed like a freight train and was just getting rolling at the end whereas her competition was giving it all they had. Last quarter in 22 and change and the last 1/16th in under 6 seconds...She's got SPEED, alright--she just saves it for the end.

She had everything working against her running style in that race and she STILL won.

LOVE that mare!

Would also love to see her go against males before she retires.

I don't know if she can run...but, boy, can she dance.

Do you really believe that Zap? She isn't as good as Smarty Jones, Ghostzapper, Curlin, Bernardini, Invasor, or countless others.

Larry Zap said...

i disagree...Zenyatta is a freak...maybe you can put Smarty Jones, Bernardini, Invasor, Curlin, Tiznow, Ghostzapper and Rachel Alexandra in this Hall of Fame race...Zenyatta blows by them all...i hope i get 8-1

Larry Zap said...

i left out Cigar & Raven's Pass from that dream matchup...maybe i get 12-1 on Zenyatta...last thought...many of us have a strong opinion about thoroughbred racing and who beats who...i at least put my name on all my opinions...Bullsbay is the latest...what bothers me is this anonymous tag many of you experts hide behind.

Unbeaten, but against whom. The competition and the speed (for the entire race, not just the last quarter) matters.

Most of all it is a shame that we will likely never see it tested how Z would perform against colts and the top filly.

Larry -

I just got done writing "a blog" to some writers here in new york about zenyatta. They are all on the Rachel bandwagon its such a joke... Maybe I'm crazy but I think you can't knock a horse for winning and Rachel has, but her last 4 races including the preakness were against very very very average product. Also does any real horse person that knows what they are watching really think zenyatta wouldn't have drawn off and ran right by everything in the preakness? I mean really people? What about the Mother Goose on those big sweeping belmont turns!!!! ha ha ha I would pay 10,000 for a ticket to see Zenyatta live at Belmont in the breeders cup classic against all those horses you mentioned larry ... The only one on that list I fear a little is Ghostzapper holy cow was he a freak.. can you imagine what ghostzapper zenyatta baby is gonna cost hahaha?? Anyway I'm getting carried away but please people watch Zenyatta's race again sunday it was a slow pace and around the turn she had absolutely NO CHANCE and stll won!!!! it is unreal what a story!!! I pray she faces Rachel!!! I will double or triple my savings account!!!!

Well, Zenyatta has to win 44 more races before she will be as good, winning-wise, as the great mare Kincsem (54 wins, never bested).

I always here the whinings about Zenyatta's competition being nobodies.
Then the SOMEBODY should go over there in Cali and beat her. ;) too many people here don't realize that trainers and owners don't want to go to race they know they could lose..Just ask Rachel Alexandra owner. Why do you think they are skipping the Breeders?

lol

NO tactical speed but shows real class and heart. One of the great horse I ever saw ran. Period! Too bad they don't run her against the males. @ 3/8 to 1/4, she would beat them all.

I wonder if Rachel's handler would grow a pair and come to the Breeders? Rachel's been beating mediocre 3 year olds and the only competition she really has left are Zenyatta, Einstein, Quality Road. The Woodward is another joke.
