Zenyatta Star Power Shines at Del Mar
Excitement has been building all week at Del Mar in anticipation of Zenyatta Day tomorrow. The highlight of the day's race card will be the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes in which Zenyatta goes after her 18th straight victory. The undefeated champion mare is also going for her third win in a row in the Hirsch.
Zenyatta arrived at the seaside track on Wednesday and has been galloping on the main track, including this morning when I followed her from trainer John Shirreffs' barn to the track and back -- along with an impressive entourage of press, photographers and news cameras ready to catch her in one of her many special poses.
A record crowd is expected at Del Mar tomorrow, when fans will receive a special pint-glass giveaway with a likeness of Zenyatta and jockey Mike Smith.
Best of luck to the great Zenyatta and her connections!

Zenyatta Remains Perfect, Breaks Records!
It was awesome. There is no better word to describe the feeling at Hollywood Park this afternoon as Zenyatta powered down the stretch and past St. Trinians to win the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap.
Zenyatta makes her way from the barns to the saddling paddock, trainer John Shirreffs (right) in tow.
Zenyatta prances in the paddock for throngs of spectators.
It was the 17th win in a row for the still unbeaten Zenyatta, who has now surpassed Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky for the longest win streak by a modern day Thoroughbred in races not restricted to state breds. Zenyatta also became the first three-time winner of the Vanity Handicap. And she did it carrying 129 pounds!
The excitement began building early in the day, as a steady stream of fans came through the gates and headed for the giveaway booth for their Zenyatta bobbleheads.

By the time the horses entered the paddock for the Vanity, a massive crowd had assembled along the rail surrounding the expansive saddling area. They also lined the stairways and balconies overlooking the paddock, hoping to get a glimpse of the great mare.
All in all, it was more than a day for the record books. It was a day to be cherished in memory for years to come.

Cast Your Vote for Zenyatta in Greatest Moment in Sports!

The Los Angeles Sports Council is asking fans to help select the greatest moments in sports for 2009 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. The annual ballot includes great moments in 15 categories including various teams, universities and associations.
In the horseracing category, Zenyatta’s Stunning Victory in the Breeders’ Cup has made the final cut!
Horseracing has only made the list twice in the last ten years. In 2005, Giacomo’s win in the Kentucky Derby as a 50-1 longshot was selected; and in 1999, it was jockey Laffit Pincay breaking Bill Shoemaker’s record of 8,833 career wins at Hollywood Park.
It’s quick and easy to cast your vote on the LA Sports website. Voting runs through Jan. 31. Winners will be revealed on Friday, Feb. 19 during a special dinner and awards show at JW Marriott at L.A. Live. The awards show will air on FSN Prime Ticket.

Zenyatta Day at Hollywood Park

Zenyatta fan Colleen Carr at Hollywood Park for Zenyatta Day
Today was Zenyatta Day at Hollywood Park, and Colleen Carr of Temecula, Calif., arrived sporting a homemade replica of the now-famous aqua and pink silks worn by Zenyatta's jockey Mike Smith for owners Ann and Jerry Moss.
She was one of thousands of exuberant fans that traveled from far and wide to be part of the celebration honoring the great mare, winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and unbeaten in 14 career starts.
Fans young and old were there to see Zenyatta as she made her final public appearance at the Inglewood track that has been her home base. They received a special edition DVD, "Zenyatta: A Living Legend," along with a "Go Zenyatta" poster, and were treated to a special appearance by Zenyatta as she galloped down the home stretch and made her way into the winners' circle one last time.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was a special guest, congratulating Zenyatta's connections and presenting a bronze California bear to the Mosses -- an award given for Outstanding Achievement. Also in the winners' circle were the members of "Team Zenyatta," including Smith, groom Mario Espinoza and his wife, Carmen (who is also Zenyatta's hotwalker), Shirreff's wife and racing manager for the Mosses, Dottie Ingordo, and exercise rider Steve Willard, who rode Zenyatta down the stretch and into the winners' circle.

Fans May Get Another Chance to View the Great Zenyatta
I spoke with trainer John Shirreffs today about how Zenyatta is "decompressing" back home at Hollywood Park following her extraordinary campaign capped off by her historic victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Shirreffs indicated that plans are under foot to bring the superstar filly out for her adoring fans -- both at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita -- before she leaves the track for the breeding farm. Stay tuned for details!

Zap! of the Week: Zenyatta Wins the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic

Zenyatta: A Horse for the People
In a scintillating performance, Zenyatta powered to victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita this afternoon before a crowd of 58,845 wildly cheering fans. In beating the world-class field of male runners, Zenyatta soundly established her place in history and preserved her perfect record, with 14 wins in 14 starts.
For those of us lucky enough to be among the cheering crowd, it was a time to be cherished and remembered forever. In an almost surreal moment after she crossed the finish line, people all around me screamed, wept, clapped wildly, and hugged each other with joy. Trainer John Shirreffs tossed his hat into the cheering crowd, and jockey Mike Smith scattered a shower of flower petals into the air as thousands crowded around the winners' circle.
Zenyatta cools down outside her barn after winning the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic
They say that when times are tough, people need a hero. Seabiscuit filled that role during the Great Depression; Zenyatta has become the same type of hero for today's fans. She clearly enjoys her role as superstar as she interacts with the crowd, strutting and two-stepping her way out onto the track, stopping every now and then to look around and pose for her adoring fans. Add to that the generosity of her owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, in sharing her with the people, and the result is a lovely ray of hope at a time when it most needed in horseracing.
Girl Power! Zenyatta, Goldikova Beat the Boys at Breeders' Cup
Although the majority of the filly and mare races were contested on Friday, Day One of the 2009 Breeders' Cup World Championship, Saturday was clearly ladies' day at Santa Anita.
In a historic repeat victory, 4-year-old filly Goldikova won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile over 10 male rivals. Ridden by Olivier Peslier for French trainer Freddie Head and owners Wertheimer and Frere, Goldikova rallied strongly to a half-length win over Courageous Cat.
In the marquee race, the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, history was made when Zenyatta prevailed in a much anticipated contest against some of the best male runners in the world. Pink and white "Zenyatta" signs flashed throughout the saddling paddock and stands, and were later waved from car windows by exuberant fans leaving the track at the end of the day.
You Go Girls!

Zenyatta, Einstein, Mine That Bird and more Prepare for Breeders' Cup 2009
Santa Anita's track closed for training at 7:30 this morning, but there were plenty of Breeders' Cup horses out, some for a last morning jaunt before the big races this afternoon. Among those I spotted were Zenyatta and Einstein, who will face each other in the Classic tomorrow, and Aspire, who also runs tomorrow in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Thoughts on a Match Race: Rachel Alexandra vs. Zenyatta
The latest in a series of guest posts
By Vic Harrison
We've discussed video displays, breakage and outs issues, past posting, starting gates and past performance info.
This week we turn our attention to Zenyatta vs. Rachel Alexandra.
Understatement Department:
"It sure would be a good race."
Obvious Statement Department:
"Rachel (R) is faster than Zenyatta (Z) and, on paper, should be favored and win."
Curious Statement Department:
My bottom line: Z beats R.
My qualifiers:
The intangibles:
I am of the opinion that, generally, the classy older horse beats the younger faster horse.
BLOGGING is not my full-time job. (“Thank God,” I can hear some of you say.) I try to squeeze out a BLOG or two every month or so. I tell you this in an attempt to lend credence to my excuse that I haven’t adequately performed research. I don’t have the time - You do it! Find match races or full field races, even, where two high profile horses square off against one another. I bet you find, in instances where the ages differ, that, more often than not, the classier older horse wins. What does “classier” mean? Honestly, in this case, I don’t know. We could talk consistency, earnings, number of wins – What I’m not saying is that Z is classy while R is not – she’s just, uhhhh…classier.
Too Much Information Department:
I was living in Orange, NJ in 1975 when I was introduced to horse racing by a girlfriend who attended Sullivan County Community College and had become a fan of harness racing at nearby Monticello Raceway. What an introduction she gave me, so to speak – a double-header: daytime Harness Racing at Freehold and evening Thoroughbred action at the Meadowlands. This was my first day ever at the races. All I did that first day was to hook up likely odds combinations in the exacta pools – In the same race, I’d hook up the 6-1 shot with the 9-2 shot and a 12-1 shot with a 3-1 shot and so on. By the end of that day I had $700 additional dollars and became a fan for life. Naturally, I’d spend thousands over the next few years actually learning how to handicap. The point here is, I lived in northern NJ and cut my teeth in the late '70’s at the Big M.
Whilst at the Meadowlands, I saw:
Cam Fella beat It’s Fritz. Both were aged 4 but you would say that Cam Fella was the classier of the two and It’s Fritz was the speedball.
The battle of the FS’s: Forest Skipper beat Falcon Seelster. Again both were 4 YO’s and again Skipper was perceived as the classier and Seelster the faster.
In 2003, Bunny Lake, aged 5, beat Worldly Beauty, aged 4.
These are examples on the Standardbred side that left me with the indelible sense that, all things being equal, class beats fast and Z beats R.
Until next time...

Obvious Statement Department:

Curious Statement Department:
My bottom line: Z beats R.
My qualifiers:
- Z likely wins at any distance over 1 1/16.
- R likely wins at 1 1/16 or shorter distances.
- In either case, the races would create a sensation for our industry – a cryin’ shame that it may not manifest.
The intangibles:
- Smart (or not) decisions by the jockeys
- Track surface – dirt, grass or synthetic
- Track condition
- Trouble at the start or during the race
- Whether I, Vic Harrison, the favorite killer, wagered on the horse.
I am of the opinion that, generally, the classy older horse beats the younger faster horse.
