Selecting Two-Year-Olds at Auction: Bloodstock Agent Gayle Van Lear at Barretts

Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Lear offers some pointers on selecting thoroughbreds at auction during a TOC seminar at Barretts Equine Limited in Pomona just prior to their May Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.

Filmed at the barn of consignor Andy Havens Bloodstock, the video features a gorgeous Southern Image colt -- Hip Number 24, which subsequently went through the sales ring unsold at $470,000. Also shown is a nice colt by Our New Recruit, Hip Number 85 in the sale.

And what happens to those that don't sell? Slaughter perhaps? Shame, shame! I expect the rescues in the area will end up with some of them shortly. How sad. I was so hoping the thoroughbred industry would own up to how many horses they ship out to slaughter.

PS how is the Pamplemousse doing these days? Rachel Alexandra gave us a fine Preakness, and Mine That Bird keeps impressing, but I would have loved to have seen the Pamplemousse run against Rachel A.

Anon#1, You are off on a rant about some "killer auction" where what you have here is a high class auction of expensive young horses. Those that "don't sell" will be put in training by their owners or partnered out after the sale.
Put your energy into something constructive, like volunteering at a rehab or rescue farm, or if you prefer, raise money for a rescue or rehab farm. This industry is finally trying to take care of the unwanteds, so go to the CARMA website and start finding a way to help.
