The Pamplemousse Schools for the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita

The Pamplemousse schooled during Friday's first race at Santa Anita for trainer Julio Canani, in preparation for today's Grade 3, $200,000 Sham Stakes at a mile and an eighth on the synthetic track. Best of luck to his connections: Canani, Alex Solis II (and jockey Alex Solis), Bienstock & Winner, and Jeff Strauss!

You can watch free race replays on Calracing.com, although you have to sign up once you get to the site. Or tomorrow, the Santa Anita replay show of all the day's races will be available on santaanita.com.

The Pamplemousse put up a major positive effort in his win but I still have caveats about his breeding. Both grand sires, Cherokee Run and Rubiano who I saw race personally were 7F G1 horses. I don't believe Kafwain adds much stamina either. Word was Pamp was totally wiped out in the winners circle. Although breeding/dosage are no longer as important in handicapping the Derby as is conditioning I still feel his pedigree could hit him in the head. His fast front end running style with a little left for the stretch reminds me of Snow Chief who was effective at a mile and a quarter. Of course he got cooked tracking too fast a pace in the Derby and turned in a career worst performance under.....Alex Solis. Watch out for Col. John's little Bro Mr. Hot Stuff to get his act together the first Saturday in May. He has galloped out his last two starts like a horse crying out for more ground.
