Zenyatta vs. Rachel Alexandra: Clocker Toby Turrell Weighs In

The buzz is getting louder with the approach of Saturday's Woodward Stakes at Saratoga, when Rachel Alexandra will take on the boys. And the video poll continues out here on the west coast... Who would like to see a match race between the two superstar fillies Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra? And if so, which one would win? Toby Turrell, clocker and publisher of "The Yellow Sheet" offers a unique perspective on the question.

According to the 'old timers' logic it would be Rachel Alexandra all the way from the gate. Regardless, I believe it would be Rachel Alexandra that would win. That doesn't stop me from wanting to see the race. If Zenyatta senses the power of Rachel, she might be more inclined to up her performance level. At any rate, James McIngvale's offer of a $2 million dollar purse for a race between the two might be the deciding push needed for the race to actually occur. With the loser getting $800,000, I don't believe there is any reason not to race.

There is one reason: fear of one or both breaking down. Imagine the horror of that. After Ruffian's match race, I could never wish to see another. Let them run both in a real race, together, but not the 2 against each other.
